Birmingham-based Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) is sponsoring a series of short films about the state’s most pressing environmental challenges and the resources at stake. The organization provided fellowships to some of the nation’s most talented graduate-level filmmakers and brought them to Alabama in summer 2012 to work on their film projects. 

¼«ÀÖ½ûµØ’s Restoring Eden student group will host the resulting film series, “Southern Exposure,” in the university’s Christenberry Planetarium 4-5:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 10.

The Southern Exposure film series includes:

Saving Shepherd Bend: A compelling documentary about a massive strip mine that imperils the Black Warrior River and threatens the drinking water of northwest of Birmingham.

Between the Fracks: A series of conversations with sportsmen, conservationists, and others who are concerned about the potential impacts of hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking” in the Talladega National Forest.

For the Fish: A look at the unprecedented array of threats to Alabama’s waterways, from the BP oil spill to coal ash pollution to contaminated runoff from construction sites.

In the Air: An examination of the health impacts of Birmingham’s persistently poor air quality, as told through interviews with doctors, local citizens, and environmentalists.

The Jewel of Alabama: Conserving the Tensaw Delta: An informative film about the Tensaw Delta, one of the most bio-diverse regions in the world.

The event is free-of-charge and open to the public.
