Department of Political Science chair Lee Trepanier was invited to give the keynote address to Wisconsin high school civics teachers at the Civic Literacy and Citizenship Symposium in October. The event, sponsored by the Center for the Study of Liberal Democracy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, presented the latest scholarship about civics education, civics engagement, civil rights and the First Amendment. In his address, Trepanier discussed the need to revitalize civics education in the United States and how to find common ground on the questions of what values we should teach, how to address the question of slavery, and whether civics education is primarily a matter of knowledge or action.
