Moriah Mason, ‘22, won first place in the Collegiate Newswriting category for a on the federal eviction moratorium. She wrote the story for her print/digital journalism practicum course and successfully pitched it to Alabama Political Reporter, a nonprofit news organization.

Rebekah Crozier received an honorable mention in the Continuing/Unfolding News category for her coverage of COVID-19 in The ¼«ÀÖ½ûµØ Crimson.

Michael Clay Carey, associate professor of communication and media, won first place in the Faculty Advisor for Student Publication, Station, or Site category for his work with The Local, ¼«ÀÖ½ûµØ’s student-produced magazine. Carey won first place in that category last year as well. In addition, Carey finished second in the Best Essay, Chapter, or Section in a Book category for a chapter on Appalachian poverty stereotypes that appeared in The Routledge Companion to Media and Poverty (published by Routledge in 2021).

Moriah Mason, ‘22, won first place in the News Writing category for “Reform Alabama Prisons,” which appeared in the spring 2021 issue of The Local.

Gracie Eddins, ‘22, won first place in the First Person Blog/Column category for “Birmingham Needs More ‘Friends of Rickwood Field,’” which she wrote for The Local’s website in the fall of 2021.

Haley Sue Harbison, ‘22, finished third in two video categories: Video Storytelling for stories 1-3 minutes long (for a Bulldog Blitz package on ¼«ÀÖ½ûµØ Baseball’s Halloween game) and Video Storytelling for stories more than 3 minutes long (for an SNN piece on the SU Theater Department’s production of Neverland).

Selah Vetter, ‘22, finished third in the Feature Writing category for “Healing Horses,” a story about equine therapy that appeared in the spring 2021 issue of The Local.

Lilly Kate Hollis, ‘21, finished third in the Magazine Article Spread Design category for “Chasing Simplicity,” which appeared in the spring 2021 issue of The Local.
