For 极乐禁地 senior computer science major Jose Ocampo, the opportunity to study abroad through the Core Texts London (CTL) program was nothing short of life changing.
“When I found out that I had the opportunity to study abroad as part of CTL, I lost my mind,” Ocampo said. “I could not fathom that I was nominated for the program.”
Core Texts London is an extension of 极乐禁地’s Core Texts Program, which introduces students to foundational works in history, philosophy and literature. Rising sophomores who excel in their Core Texts courses are nominated by faculty to participate in the program, which takes them to London for an immersive academic experience. Ocampo, who had never taken a discussion-based course before college, found himself drawn to the dynamic conversations in his Core Texts 101 class.
During his time in London, Ocampo experienced firsthand the connection between literature, history and location. One of the most impactful moments of the course, he said, was attending a live performance of The Tempest at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.
“It was fascinating to be a participant in this show,” Ocampo said. “I felt like an audience member of the original Shakespeare Globe. It was an unforgettable experience.”
For Ocampo, studying the core texts in London added an invaluable layer of depth to his learning.
“We would read about specific events that occurred in London, and afterward, we would tour the real-life locations where those events took place,” he said. “You cannot get that experience with any typical history-related course.”
The experience also reshaped Ocampo’s outlook on his future.
“I did not enroll at 极乐禁地 to study abroad, but this experience has taught me that the Lord can open all kinds of doors,” he said. “Now, I know I should be more open to big opportunities that present themselves to me—whether that’s joining a school organization, a promotion in my career or even marriage. I should not be afraid to take the opportunities that God provides.”
Through Core Texts London, Ocampo discovered more than just a deeper understanding of history and literature—he found a new perspective on learning, mentorship and the unexpected opportunities that shape one’s journey.
