About

My current role requires me to develop undergraduate students as sport coaches, providing them with an awareness and understanding of the underpinning motor learning and coaching research. The research findings are then practically tested via practical coaching either on site, or during the work placement module, with reflective practice encouraged and monitored to develop and expand the coaching toolkit of each student.

More global challenges (e.g. doping, concussion) are investigated in the issues in sport coaching module, where ethical frameworks are applied to allow the students to clearly establish how those factors may impact on them at the level of day to day coaching. The skills of discussion and debate are introduced with the goal being to develop a more holistic and empathetic understanding of the contemporary issues within sport.

All of the above requires an individualised approach as no two coaches will ever approach a problem the same way, and so the challenge is to find each students strengths as a coach whilst still having their practice underpinned by appropriate academic rigour.
