Dr Laura Ritchie

About

Professor Laura Ritchie is Professor of Learning and Teaching at the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏÂÛ̳, UK. She is vibrant in her teaching, research, music-making, and in life; she embodies a ‘yes’ attitude.  Her enthusiasm is contagious and inspires people to realize their goals through positive achievement and reach beyond their dreams.

Laura has devised both undergraduate and postgraduate curricula, including the first bespoke undergraduate music pedagogy degree in the UK and the MA Music courses at Chichester and a postgraduate course for the European String Teachers Association. At Chichester she leads the programmes involving Music Teaching (training to develop private/studio teaching), the two Masters degrees- in Performance and Teaching, and the PhD programmes. Laura’s musical background is as a classical cellist, originally training in Chicago with Hans Jensen before coming to the UK to pursue her Masters and PhD at the Royal College of Music. Laura’s PhD research centred on distinguishing self-beliefs for learning and for performing, by creating and validating questionnaires to measure self-efficacy in psychological studies. As a musician Laura spans genres and has performed both as a classical recitalist and as a member of The Mummers on Jools Holland and at Glastonbury.

Beside being a cellist, Laura is a Chartered Psychologist and has published and presented internationally, in North and South America and across Europe. Laura’s teaching is heavily influenced by her research into people’s self-efficacy beliefs and cognitive processes (specifically metacognition and self-regulation) as they learn and perform/carry out tasks. Her recent book (2021) is a practical and personal book about self-efficacy, strategic thinking, and recognising possibility in order to adopt the yes of self-efficacy into daily life. Laura’s previous books focused on bringing knowledge of self-efficacy to educators in (2015) and in (2017) of telling the story of experiential co-learning with her students in an unprecedented and remarkable student-led trip to California to work with dozens of high school students.

Laura Ritchie also leads the Lab for Self-Efficacy, Performance, and Agency.
