About
Starlene is a Lecturer in Education for those on Primary Teacher Education and Education Studies programmes.
Experience
Before joining the University as a provider of Initial Teacher Training, Starlene actually attended the University herself and complete the degree earning a BA (Hons) in Primary Teaching with a specialism in Global Citizenship. She worked as a qualified primary school teacher within a mainstream school in Hampshire. During her time in school, Starlene worked on the development of Global Citizenship projects both inside and out of the classroom resulting in the development of a scheme of work for 鈥淚dentity, Equality and Diversity education鈥�, which has been integrated as a permanent fixture of her school’s curriculum.
Starlene has worked in partnership with Portsmouth City Council as a co-writer to produce the Anti-racism toolkit for schools, colleges and early years settings – a guide to support educators in navigating discussions about race. She also co-wrote the Pearson iLowerSecondary Global Citizenship Programme inclusive of a complete thematic curriculum, resources and assessments to deliver this core subject to Year 8 students in international schools. This was later accompanied by a teacher guide to support teachers with the delivery of Global Citizenship themes and prepare learners to be Global Citizens. Starlene is a university consultant and guest speaker on Social Justice Education and Global Citizenship modules for trainee teachers and training in schools.
Interests
Starlene has a vested interest in the promotion of equality, diversity and inclusion. She is passionate about the development of unambiguous education and inclusion of the Global Majority in UK History within schools and the National Curriculum.
Starlene hopes to develop her interest in these areas by completing future research and working with other institutions to do so. Additionally, Starlene has an extensive background as a trained dancer and has used this expertise in role as PE co-ordinator to encourage active learning.
