Programme Content

We will examine current issues in English language teaching and learning and their theoretical underpinnings and consider the implementation of teaching methodologies in the English language classroom.听 We will focus on skills development, exploring how the processes of writing can be developed in students, ways of developing students鈥 academic reading skills, their listening and speaking skills and the development of both fluency and accuracy.

Current approaches in the field of teaching English vocabulary and new research in the field of teaching grammar will be explored.听 The practical implications for classroom teaching of all these areas will be considered.

The programme will enable the participants develop the skills to conduct their own classroom-based research and involve them in evaluating their current practices as a basis for change and development.听 In addition, the course seeks to develop participants鈥 personal language competence.

Aspects of contemporary English in its socio-cultural context will be examined. 听We will also concentrate on the development of English language skills in professional contexts. 听We will explore the interaction that occurs between 鈥渞esearch in the classroom鈥, 鈥渋nnovation in education鈥 and 鈥渢he improvement of teaching and learning processes鈥 in the Conducting Classroom-based Research component.

Finally, competency to teach effectively at university level in an EMI context, calls for the ability to formulate and explain complex concepts at a high level of abstraction.

We will explore pedagogical principles, recent educational research, the language demands and the implications for EMI curriculum design.
